2. Load Performance
Run every key page through Google PageSpeed Insights. Note the Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and Interaction to Next Paint (INP) scores. Pages with LCP above 2.5 seconds lose roughly 7% of conversions per additional second of delay, according to Google's own data. Common culprits: uncompressed images, render-blocking JavaScript, and third-party scripts that load synchronously. The fix is usually straightforward, but it requires someone to actually measure. Most teams never do.

4. CTA Placement and Hierarchy
Every page should have one primary action. Not two, not four. Scroll through each page and ask: what is this page trying to get the user to do? If you cannot answer immediately, the page has a hierarchy problem. Check that the primary CTA is visible without scrolling on both desktop and mobile. Verify that secondary actions (links, text buttons) are visually distinct from the primary action. When everything looks equally important, nothing looks important.
Colour contrast plays a significant role here. Your primary CTA should have the highest visual contrast on the page. If it blends into surrounding elements or competes with other coloured buttons, click-through rates suffer. Test your CTA visibility by taking a screenshot, blurring it in an image editor, and checking whether the button still stands out. If it disappears into the blur, it does not have enough visual weight.
5. Mobile Responsiveness
Do not test mobile by resizing your browser window. Use actual devices, or at minimum Chrome DevTools in device emulation mode with touch simulation enabled. Check for horizontal scroll, text that requires pinching to read, and elements that overlap. Pay particular attention to tables, embedded videos, and pop-ups. Modal windows are especially problematic on mobile: if the close button sits outside the visible viewport, users get trapped. Test on at least two screen sizes (a smaller phone like iPhone SE and a larger one like iPhone 15 Pro Max).
Touch target sizing is a frequent failure point. Google's Material Design guidelines specify a minimum of 48x48 CSS pixels for interactive elements. Apple recommends 44x44 points. 6. Error Handling
Deliberately break things. Submit empty forms. Enter invalid email addresses. Try to access pages that do not exist. Click back during a multi-step process. What happens? Good error handling is specific ("Please enter a valid email address"), not generic ("An error occurred"). Your 404 page should include navigation back to useful content, not a dead end. Check that error messages appear near the field that caused them, not at the top of the page where users might miss the connection.
Error recovery is just as important as error messaging. If a user fills out a long form and hits an error on submission, does the form retain their input, or does it clear everything and force them to start over? Cleared form data after an error is one of the most rage-inducing UX patterns in existence, and it is still surprisingly common. The technical fix is simple (preserve form state on failed validation), but it requires someone to test the failure path, which most QA processes skip.
7. Contrast and Accessibility
Use the WAVE browser extension or axe DevTools to run an automated accessibility scan. Focus on colour contrast ratios first: WCAG 2.1 requires a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Light grey text on white backgrounds is the single most common failure we see. Also check that all images have alt text, all form inputs have labels, and the page can be navigated entirely with a keyboard. Heading hierarchy is not just a visual concern. Screen readers use heading tags to build a navigable outline of the page. If your headings skip from H1 to H4, or if you use heading tags for styling rather than structure, assistive technology users lose the ability to scan your content efficiently. Good heading structure benefits SEO as well, since search engines use heading hierarchy to understand content relevance and topic boundaries.
9. Search Functionality
If your site has search, test it with misspellings, partial terms, and synonyms. Does it return useful results or a blank page? Search with zero results is one of the highest-friction dead ends a user can hit. Check whether the search bar is visible on mobile without opening a menu. On sites with more than 50 pages of content, search becomes a primary navigation tool. Treat it that way. Look at your search analytics if you have them. The terms people search for most often tell you exactly what your navigation is failing to surface.
Zero-results pages deserve special attention. When a user searches and finds nothing, the default response on most sites is a blank state with "No results found." That is a dead end. A better approach is to suggest related terms, surface popular pages, or offer a direct link to contact support. The user searched because they had intent. 10. Checkout and Conversion Flow
Walk through your entire conversion funnel as if you were a customer who has never seen the product before. For e-commerce, that means adding to cart, entering shipping details, selecting payment, and reaching confirmation. For SaaS, it means signup through first meaningful action. For lead generation, it means form submission through thank-you page. At each step, ask: is the next action obvious? Are there distractions pulling attention away from completion? Is there a progress indicator? Can the user go back without losing their data?
Trust signals matter enormously in conversion flows. Security badges, clear return policies, customer reviews near the purchase button, and transparent pricing (no surprise fees at checkout) all reduce the anxiety that causes abandonment. How to Prioritise What You Find
After running these ten checks, you will likely have a list of 15 to 40 issues. Do not try to fix them all at once. Score each issue on two axes: user impact (how many people does this affect, and how badly?) and implementation effort (quick CSS fix, or a two-week rebuild?). Start with high-impact, low-effort fixes. These are the wins that shift metrics within days. The deeper structural issues go on the roadmap with proper scoping.
A useful framework is to classify each issue into one of four buckets: quick wins (high impact, low effort), strategic improvements (high impact, high effort), easy fills (low impact, low effort), and deprioritised items (low impact, high effort). Quick wins go into the current sprint. Strategic improvements get scoped as dedicated projects. Easy fills get batched into a cleanup sprint. Deprioritised items go on the backlog and get revisited quarterly.
Run this audit quarterly. Products drift. New features introduce new friction. What worked six months ago might be breaking today because someone added a third-party chat widget that covers the mobile CTA.
